ABNORMAL STERN TUBE OIL LOSS LEADS TO SEVERE BEARING DAMAGE

A bulk carrier experienced abnormally high oil consumption from the stern tube lubrication system and repeatedly replenished the oil during operation. Initially suspected to be a stern tube seal problem, the actual inspection revealed water inside the stern tube and severe peeling of the bearing metal from the working surface.

MTB carried out the initial seal bonding and later supplied and installed a new stern tube bearing at dry dock, together with alignment checks, dimensional inspection, and seal tightness testing.

This case highlights the importance of early investigation of abnormal oil loss and regular monitoring of the stern tube lubrication system to prevent minor abnormalities from developing into serious bearing damage, costly repairs, and operational downtime.
