REPAIRING A COUPLING FOR WINDLASS SYSTEM

Issue Description

During windlass operation, the crew observed the following:

  • The hydraulic motor was running normally, with stable oil pressure
  • However, the windlass drum did not rotate, even under load
  • No abnormal noise or visible oil leakage

MTB’s technicians determined that the coupling was slipping and no torque was being transmitted from the hydraulic motor to the drum.

MTB’s Repair Process

Upon inspection onboard, MTB proceeded with the following steps:

  • Removed the coupling
  • Inspection revealed worn-out friction plates, weakened springs, and aged sealing elements
  • Replaced all damaged components and thoroughly cleaned the unit
  • Reinstalled the coupling, aligned the system, and performed test runs

Result: Windlass system resumed normal operation with stable pulling force and no vibration.
