Governor Trouble

MTB performed maintenance on a marine governor with initial symptoms of severe shaft vibration during pre-overhaul testing. Upon disassembly, the following issues were identified:

  • The interior of the governor was extremely dirty, containing water and sludge.
  • Shutdown solenoid valve malfunctioned.
  • Governor shaft was deeply worn with visible grooves.
  • Housing was significantly worn and scratched.
  • Power piston was worn.
  • Compensating piston was scratched and worn.
  • Rollers were in poor condition.
  • All seals and packing were damaged, resulting in lube oil leakage.

Maintenance Steps:

  • Disassemble, inspect, and clean all components.
  • Polish the shaft, pistons, and housing.
  • Replace the solenoid valve, seals, and rollers.
  • Reassemble and calibrate to verify stability.

Result: After maintenance, the governor operated smoothly with no oil leaks or excessive vibration.
